A box plot (also called a box-and-whisker plot) summarizes the statistical distribution of a numeric column grouped by a category. Each box shows the median, interquartile range (IQR), and whiskers extending to the min/max (excluding outliers, which are shown as individual points).
Select a categorical X column (e.g., group, region, experiment variant) and a numeric Y column (e.g., latency, score, value). One box is drawn per unique X value, making it easy to compare distributions across groups.
Frequently asked questions
What do the parts of a box plot mean?
The horizontal line inside the box is the median. The box spans the interquartile range (25th to 75th percentile). Whiskers extend to the furthest data point within 1.5× IQR. Points outside the whiskers are outliers.
