Connect your data to Claude Code

Query your databases directly from the Claude Code CLI — without leaving your terminal.

What Claude Code can do with Sequel

Database access from the terminal

Claude Code can now query your databases as part of agentic coding sessions. Ask it to check schemas, pull sample data, or verify data assumptions — all without leaving the terminal.

Data-aware code generation

When Claude Code knows your actual schema through Sequel, it generates more accurate SQL, migrations, and ORM models — grounded in what's really in your database, not guesses.

Works in any Claude Code session

Once added via CLI, Sequel tools are available in every Claude Code session — interactive, one-shot, or automated. No per-project setup needed.

Example prompts

Everything you can ask Claude Code about your data.

Ask in plain English. Sequel turns it into a query, runs it read-only, and Claude Code hands back the answer. No SQL, no dashboards, no CSV exports.

What you can ask Claude Code
  • What tables exist in our database and what do they store?
  • Show me the schema for the `orders` table
  • Find all foreign key constraints in our production database
  • How many rows are in each table?
  • What's the distribution of `status` values in `payments`?

Setup

Add Sequel to Claude Code

Drop the Sequel MCP server into Claude Code, then ask it anything about your connected data. Sequel is read-only by default and shows each query before it runs.

claude mcp add (CLI)

claude mcp add --transport http sequel https://api.sequel.sh/mcp \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer sql_your_api_key"

Sequel CLI

Install Sequel MCP to Claude Code

The Sequel CLI installs Sequel into Claude Code in one step — it signs you in, provisions a scoped API key, and writes the right config to the right place. No keys to copy by hand.

Prefer npm? npm install -g @sequelsh/cli@latest works too.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add Sequel to Claude Code?

Run the `claude mcp add` command shown above in your terminal. Replace `sql_your_api_key` with a key from Settings → API Keys. The server is added at the default `local` scope (current project only).

How do I make Sequel available across every project?

Add the `--scope user` flag: `claude mcp add --scope user --transport http sequel https://api.sequel.sh/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer sql_your_api_key"`. User-scope servers are available in every Claude Code session on this machine.

Can I verify Sequel is connected?

Run `claude mcp list` to see all configured MCP servers, or `claude mcp get sequel` to inspect the Sequel config specifically.

Does this work in Claude Code's non-interactive mode?

Yes. Sequel tools are available in both interactive (`claude`) and non-interactive (`claude -p 'your prompt'`) modes. They're also available when using Claude Code via the SDK.

Can I add Sequel to a specific project only?

Yes. Use the `--scope project` flag: `claude mcp add --scope project --transport http sequel https://api.sequel.sh/mcp --header "..."`. Project-scope servers are stored in `.mcp.json` at the repo root and shared with anyone who clones the repo.
