How to Connect Ahrefs to dots
Query your Ahrefs data directly from dots using Sequel’s MCP server. Ask questions in plain English, with no SQL, no dashboards, and no context switching.
Short answer
Connect Ahrefs to Sequel, then add Sequel's MCP server to dots using the config on this page. dots can then query your live Ahrefs data in plain English, with no connector code and no CSV exports. Both steps take a few minutes.
Everything you can ask dots about your Ahrefs data.
Ask in plain English — Sequel translates it into a Ahrefs query, runs it, and dots hands back the answer. No SQL, no dashboards, no CSV exports.
- What's the domain rating and organic traffic for ahrefs.com?
- Show the top 50 referring domains for competitor.com.
- Which organic keywords does example.com rank for in the US top 10?
- What's the search volume and difficulty for 'text to sql'?
- List example.com's top pages by organic traffic.
How it works
Three steps to get started
Connect Ahrefs to Sequel
In your Sequel dashboard, go to Connections and add Ahrefs. Sequel handles authentication and schema discovery automatically.
Add Sequel to the agent
Follow the steps below to add Sequel to dots. It signs in with your Sequel account over OAuth, so there is no key to copy.
Ask dots about your data
Restart dots and start asking questions. "What's the domain rating and organic traffic for ahrefs.com?" — and get a real answer backed by live Ahrefs data.
Why dots
What dots does with your Ahrefs data
No separate setup for the dot
There is no "connect apps to your dot" step for custom connectors. Anything installed under Settings → Plugins, including a developer-mode MCP connector, is available to the dot from its first message, and the same plugin serves ChatGPT, Codex and your dots.
It keeps working after you leave
A dot runs on its own cloud computer and pursues goals in the background, so it can use Sequel inside a scheduled task: the Monday morning numbers, a daily spend-versus-revenue check, an alert when signups fall off their trend.
Read-only by default, on both sides
Sequel marks its tools read-only and shows each query before it runs. Set the Sequel plugin to "Allow read-only tools" and reads run freely while anything that changes something has to ask, so a dot acting on its own initiative cannot touch your data.
Configuration
Add Sequel to dots
Use it in ChatGPT → Settings → Connectors (developer mode). dots signs in with your Sequel account over OAuth, so there is no API key to paste.
ChatGPT → Settings → Connectors (developer mode)
Server URL: https://api.sequel.sh/mcp Authentication: OAuth, sign in with Sequel when ChatGPT asks Then: Settings → Plugins → Sequel → Allow read-only tools
Install
Install Ahrefs MCP in dots
Pick your app and Sequel installs itself: a one-click link where the client supports it, that client’s own few steps where it doesn’t. Every route signs in with your Sequel account over OAuth, so there is no API key to copy and nothing to keep in sync.
Already have an MCP client?
https://api.sequel.sh/mcp
Add it as a remote (streamable HTTP) server and sign in when prompted. Skills come with it; nothing else to install. Manual setup per client

- 1In ChatGPT, open Settings and turn on Developer mode. It needs a paid plan, and in a workspace an admin may have to grant it.
- 2Add a connector, name it Sequel, paste the URL and leave authentication on OAuth. Sign in to Sequel in the window that opens.
- 3Under Settings → Plugins, set Sequel to “Allow read-only tools”.
- 4Your dot has it already. Ask it “which apps can you use right now?” to confirm.

Frequently asked questions
How do I connect Ahrefs to dots?
You need two things: (1) connect Ahrefs to Sequel in your Sequel dashboard under Connections, and (2) add the Sequel MCP config to dots using the setup shown above. Once both are done, dots can query your Ahrefs data directly.
What Ahrefs data can dots access?
dots can access any data available through your Ahrefs connection in Sequel. Use Sequel's search tool to discover available metrics and dimensions, then execute queries to pull the data you need.
Is my Ahrefs data sent to dots's servers?
Query results are returned to dots as context within your conversation. Only the data you explicitly ask about is retrieved. Sequel never stores your query results permanently — they exist only for the duration of the tool call.
Do I need a Sequel account?
Yes. You need a Sequel account to connect Ahrefs and generate an API key. Sign up free at sequel.sh — no credit card required. Then create a connection to Ahrefs and generate an API key from Settings → API Keys.
Can I connect multiple Ahrefs accounts?
Yes. Sequel supports multiple connections of the same type. If you have multiple Ahrefs accounts or properties, add each as a separate connection in Sequel. dots will be able to query all of them.
Can an OpenAI dot use a custom MCP server?
Yes. A connector added through developer mode in ChatGPT is available to your dot with no extra step, because a dot has access to the plugins installed on your ChatGPT account. The same connector works in a normal chat, in Codex, and inside the dot's scheduled tasks.
How do I add Sequel to my dot?
In ChatGPT, turn on developer mode in Settings, add a new connector named Sequel with the URL https://api.sequel.sh/mcp, choose OAuth, and sign in to Sequel in the window that opens. Then ask your dot "which apps can you use right now?" Sequel should be one of them.
What do I need to use dots with Sequel?
A dot (included with ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets), developer mode for custom connectors, which is paid-plan only and may need a workspace admin's permission, and a Sequel account with at least one source connected.
Which permission level should I give the Sequel plugin?
"Allow read-only tools" is the right default: Sequel flags each tool, so reads run without interruption while anything that changes something asks first. Note that an explicit request in the conversation counts as your approval, so the level protects you from the dot acting unprompted only.
How do I connect Ahrefs to Sequel?
Create an API key in Ahrefs under Account settings → API keys (workspace owners and admins only), paste it into Sequel, and click Test. The key is sent to the Ahrefs API v3 as a Bearer token.
Do I need a specific Ahrefs plan?
The Ahrefs API is available on eligible paid plans. On other plans you still get a limited set of free test queries. See Ahrefs' pricing page for current API eligibility.
Can Sequel change anything in my Ahrefs account?
No. The connector only ships read-only reports (domain overview, backlinks, referring domains, organic keywords, top pages, keyword research). It cannot modify your Ahrefs projects or settings.
Will queries consume my Ahrefs API units?
Most reports cost Ahrefs API units (minimum 50 per request), billed against your plan's allowance. Validating your key is free. Use specific targets and small row limits to keep usage low.
