How to Connect Amplitude to dots

Query your Amplitude data directly from dots using Sequel’s MCP server. Ask questions in plain English, with no SQL, no dashboards, and no context switching.

Short answer

Connect Amplitude to Sequel, then add Sequel's MCP server to dots using the config on this page. dots can then query your live Amplitude data in plain English, with no connector code and no CSV exports. Both steps take a few minutes.

Example prompts

Everything you can ask dots about your Amplitude data.

Ask in plain English — Sequel translates it into a Amplitude query, runs it, and dots hands back the answer. No SQL, no dashboards, no CSV exports.

What you can ask dots
  • What's the 7-day retention for users who signed up last month?
  • Show me the conversion funnel from signup to first paid action over the past 30 days.
  • Which onboarding step has the biggest drop-off?
  • How many users triggered 'Subscription Started' last week, by plan?
  • Daily active users for the past 90 days, segmented by platform.

How it works

Three steps to get started

1

Connect Amplitude to Sequel

In your Sequel dashboard, go to Connections and add Amplitude. Sequel handles authentication and schema discovery automatically.

2

Add Sequel to the agent

Follow the steps below to add Sequel to dots. It signs in with your Sequel account over OAuth, so there is no key to copy.

3

Ask dots about your data

Restart dots and start asking questions. "What's the 7-day retention for users who signed up last month?" — and get a real answer backed by live Amplitude data.

Why dots

What dots does with your Amplitude data

No separate setup for the dot

There is no "connect apps to your dot" step for custom connectors. Anything installed under Settings → Plugins, including a developer-mode MCP connector, is available to the dot from its first message, and the same plugin serves ChatGPT, Codex and your dots.

It keeps working after you leave

A dot runs on its own cloud computer and pursues goals in the background, so it can use Sequel inside a scheduled task: the Monday morning numbers, a daily spend-versus-revenue check, an alert when signups fall off their trend.

Read-only by default, on both sides

Sequel marks its tools read-only and shows each query before it runs. Set the Sequel plugin to "Allow read-only tools" and reads run freely while anything that changes something has to ask, so a dot acting on its own initiative cannot touch your data.

Configuration

Add Sequel to dots

Use it in ChatGPT → Settings → Connectors (developer mode). dots signs in with your Sequel account over OAuth, so there is no API key to paste.

ChatGPT → Settings → Connectors (developer mode)

Server URL:
https://api.sequel.sh/mcp

Authentication:
OAuth, sign in with Sequel when ChatGPT asks

Then: Settings → Plugins → Sequel → Allow read-only tools

Install

Install Amplitude MCP in dots

Pick your app and Sequel installs itself: a one-click link where the client supports it, that client’s own few steps where it doesn’t. Every route signs in with your Sequel account over OAuth, so there is no API key to copy and nothing to keep in sync.

Already have an MCP client?

https://api.sequel.sh/mcp

Add it as a remote (streamable HTTP) server and sign in when prompted. Skills come with it; nothing else to install. Manual setup per client

Add Sequel to dots

Server URL

https://api.sequel.sh/mcp
  1. 1In ChatGPT, open Settings and turn on Developer mode. It needs a paid plan, and in a workspace an admin may have to grant it.
  2. 2Add a connector, name it Sequel, paste the URL and leave authentication on OAuth. Sign in to Sequel in the window that opens.
  3. 3Under Settings → Plugins, set Sequel to “Allow read-only tools”.
  4. 4Your dot has it already. Ask it “which apps can you use right now?” to confirm.

Frequently asked questions

How do I connect Amplitude to dots?

You need two things: (1) connect Amplitude to Sequel in your Sequel dashboard under Connections, and (2) add the Sequel MCP config to dots using the setup shown above. Once both are done, dots can query your Amplitude data directly.

What Amplitude data can dots access?

dots can access any data available through your Amplitude connection in Sequel. Use Sequel's search tool to discover available metrics and dimensions, then execute queries to pull the data you need.

Is my Amplitude data sent to dots's servers?

Query results are returned to dots as context within your conversation. Only the data you explicitly ask about is retrieved. Sequel never stores your query results permanently — they exist only for the duration of the tool call.

Do I need a Sequel account?

Yes. You need a Sequel account to connect Amplitude and generate an API key. Sign up free at sequel.sh — no credit card required. Then create a connection to Amplitude and generate an API key from Settings → API Keys.

Can I connect multiple Amplitude accounts?

Yes. Sequel supports multiple connections of the same type. If you have multiple Amplitude accounts or properties, add each as a separate connection in Sequel. dots will be able to query all of them.

Can an OpenAI dot use a custom MCP server?

Yes. A connector added through developer mode in ChatGPT is available to your dot with no extra step, because a dot has access to the plugins installed on your ChatGPT account. The same connector works in a normal chat, in Codex, and inside the dot's scheduled tasks.

How do I add Sequel to my dot?

In ChatGPT, turn on developer mode in Settings, add a new connector named Sequel with the URL https://api.sequel.sh/mcp, choose OAuth, and sign in to Sequel in the window that opens. Then ask your dot "which apps can you use right now?" Sequel should be one of them.

What do I need to use dots with Sequel?

A dot (included with ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets), developer mode for custom connectors, which is paid-plan only and may need a workspace admin's permission, and a Sequel account with at least one source connected.

Which permission level should I give the Sequel plugin?

"Allow read-only tools" is the right default: Sequel flags each tool, so reads run without interruption while anything that changes something asks first. Note that an explicit request in the conversation counts as your approval, so the level protects you from the dot acting unprompted only.

How do I connect Amplitude to Sequel?

Open Amplitude → Settings → Projects → [your project] → General, copy the API Key and Secret Key, pick your region (US or EU), and paste them into Sequel's Amplitude connector. Sequel uses HTTP Basic auth with these keys against Amplitude's read APIs — no OAuth dance required.

Which Amplitude region should I pick?

Use the region the project was created in. US projects live on amplitude.com; EU projects live on analytics.eu.amplitude.com. If queries return 401 or empty results, the region is almost always the culprit — switch it and re-test.

Can Sequel write or modify data in Amplitude?

No. The connector only ships read-only tools: list events, list event properties, get chart, funnel report, retention report, and event segmentation. There is no write endpoint exposed to the agent, so Sequel cannot create events, charts, or cohorts on your behalf.

Do you support saved charts and dashboards?

Yes — if you already built a chart in Amplitude, share its chart ID with Sequel and it will pull the result via the Dashboard REST API, then re-segment or compare it conversationally without you re-creating it.
