Connect PostHog MCP to your AI Agents

Ask your PostHog product data anything — with HogQL under the hood.

Example prompts

Everything you can ask your agent about your PostHog data.

Ask in plain English — Sequel translates it into a PostHog query, runs it, and your agent hands back the answer. No SQL, no dashboards, no CSV exports.

  • What's the 7-day retention of users in the 'Power users' cohort?
  • Which 10 feature flags have the most evaluations this week?
  • Compare conversion rate by browser for the checkout funnel.

Sequel CLI

Install PostHog MCP to your agent

The Sequel CLI installs PostHog into your coding agent in one step — it signs you in, provisions a scoped API key, and writes the right config to the right place. No keys to copy by hand.

Prefer npm? npm install -g @sequelsh/cli@latest works too.

Frequently asked questions

How do I connect PostHog to Sequel?

Create a Personal API Key in PostHog under Settings → Personal API Keys with read-only scopes: query:read, event_definitions:read, property_definitions:read, insight:read, cohort:read, project:read. Paste it into Sequel along with your host (US Cloud, EU Cloud, or self-hosted base URL) and your numeric project ID, then click Test.

Does Sequel work with PostHog Cloud and self-hosted PostHog?

Both. For PostHog Cloud, use https://us.posthog.com or https://eu.posthog.com. For self-hosted, point the host field at your own base URL (no trailing slash) — as long as the same Personal API Key endpoints exist, Sequel works identically.

What is HogQL, and why does it matter?

HogQL is PostHog's SQL dialect that runs against the raw events table. It's strictly more expressive than the insight builder — joins, window functions, conditional aggregations. Sequel writes HogQL under the hood, which is why it can answer questions a built-in insight can't.

Can Sequel write or change anything in PostHog?

No. The connector only ships read-only tools (HogQL query, list events, list properties, list insights, list cohorts) and works with read-only scopes. The agent cannot create insights, dashboards, cohorts, or feature flags.

Does Sequel see session replays or autocapture content?

Sequel can query session metadata and event names — including autocapture events — but does not download replay videos or full DOM snapshots. Replays stay where they belong: in PostHog's UI.

How fresh is the data?

Queries hit the PostHog API at the moment you ask, so freshness matches HogQL's own freshness — typically seconds to a minute behind ingest. The Person table follows PostHog's standard person-merge semantics.

Does Sequel store my PostHog data?

No. Query results are returned to your session and discarded; only your Personal API Key is stored, encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM. You can rotate or revoke the key from PostHog Settings at any time.

Can I combine PostHog with other data sources?

Yes. The most common combos are PostHog + Postgres (behavior vs. accounts), PostHog + Stripe (behavior vs. revenue), and PostHog + GA4 (product vs. acquisition). Sequel reasons across all of them in a single question.

Will rate limits ever throttle my questions?

PostHog enforces per-project HogQL concurrency and request-rate limits. Sequel queues and respects them; large fan-out questions will sometimes pause briefly rather than fail. If you hit limits often, contact PostHog support or upgrade your plan.
